Speaking with someone who stutters

When speaking with someone who stutters, the way you respond can affect how comfortable and confident they feel. By being calm and respectful, you can help make communication easier.

Try the following strategies:

  • Listen to the person the same way you would to someone who doesn’t stutter. Focus on what the person is saying, not how they are saying it. Keeping the conversation going is more important than perfection.
  • Be patient. Let them finish without interrupting.
  • Don’t ask the person to slow down or start over. Instead, speak calmly and a little slower than usual.
  • Let the person take their time, because feeling rushed or pressured can make them stutter more.
  • Keep your body language and expression relaxed.
  • If you are having trouble understanding what the person is saying, you can ask them to clarify.
