Apraxia is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard to speak. It can happen when the part of your brain that controls speech muscles is damaged, such as after a brain injury or stroke.
With apraxia, your speech muscles work, but the brain signal telling them how to move to make speech sounds is disrupted. It can make it difficult to say the right sounds and words.
Childhood apraxia of speech is different from apraxia in adults. Its exact cause is unknown. It can happen on its own or along with a genetic or medical condition.
