Feeding and swallowing

Feeding and swallowing problems affect a person’s ability to eat food and drink liquids safely and comfortably.

Feeding is getting food and liquid to your mouth, getting ready to eat or drink it, and chewing or holding it in your mouth before swallowing.

To swallow safely, you have to control the food or liquid in your mouth and move it to your stomach without choking or getting it into your airway or lungs.
