Care At Home After Your Child's Surgery

Your child’s healthcare team will tell you how to care for your child after surgery before you leave the hospital. We encourage you to ask questions about your child’s care during their hospital stay.

For general information on how to take care of your child after you leave the hospital, go to MyHealth Alberta and search the Patient Care Handouts for your child’s surgery or procedure.

If you’re worried about your child

If you’re worried about your child, call your child’s surgeon's office or clinic. If the office or clinic is closed, listen for a phone message that may tell you what to do or who to call.

You can also call Health Link to speak to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week about any concern. Dial 811 to use this free service.

Prescriptions

Some hospitals have a pharmacy. If you need a prescription filled before you go home, check with the hospital to see if there is a pharmacy on site.
