Pain definitions

Acute pain

Acute pain is short-term pain that usually starts quickly and often happens because of an injury, surgery, or illness. It usually gets better as the body heals. Learn more

Transitional pain

Transitional pain happens when short-term (acute) pain doesn’t go away as expected and starts lasting longer. It can sometimes turn into chronic pain. Learn more

Chronic pain

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than 3 months, and often carries on after the usual healing time. It can affect daily activities and overall quality of life. Learn more
