Substance Use: Pregnancy and Quitting Smoking

Safety Concerns

Is it safe for my baby and for me to quit while I’m pregnant?

Absolutely! Although many people say that smoking calms them down or reduces their stress level, it actually does the opposite. Smoking makes your heart rate and blood pressure go up. These are also symptoms of stress, which aren’t good for you or your baby.

Every time you smoke, the oxygen in your blood is replaced by carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas). This means that both you and your baby aren’t getting the healthy amount of oxygen your body and your baby’s body needs.

  • Make a plan to reduce stress in your life. Plan time for the things that help you relax.
  • Eat well and stay fit. Ask your healthcare provider for help if you aren’t sure how to do this.
  • Think ahead about how you will deal with stress when it happens.
  • Instead of smoking, make a list of things you can do to replace it.
  • Talk to someone who can help you deal with the challenges in your life.
  • Get enough sleep.
