After your stillbirth

What is stillbirth?

When you have been pregnant for 20 weeks or longer and your baby dies before or during birth, it is called a stillbirth. About 1 in 200 pregnancies ends in a stillbirth. In about 1 in 4 (25%) stillbirths, the cause is not known.

The reaction of parents to a stillbirth may be to blame themselves, but a stillbirth is no one’s fault. Parents may want to know what factors increase risk of stillbirth, but usually no specific factor can be determined to be the cause.

If you are interested in finding out more about what can increase the risk of stillbirth, have a conversation with your healthcare provider.
