After a Brain Injury

Care for the caregiver

After a brain injury, a person needs care, someone to spend time with, and emotional support. As a caregiver, you may have many other responsibilities, like working and caring for children. Being a caregiver can be overwhelming and challenging. There are groups and programs (such as home health care and respite care) that support caregivers.

Tips for caregivers

  • Ask for help when you need it.
  • Set limits. There are only so many hours in the day and only so many things you can do. Some things can wait.
  • Take time for yourself. Taking an hour, a day, a weekend, or a week away can help you relax and have a break.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family.
  • Learn relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, or muscle relaxation.
  • Take care of yourself. Caregivers are at risk of health problems related to stress. If you’re worried about your health, talk to your doctor.
  • Take time to exercise. Exercise relaxes you, puts you in a better mood, keeps your body strong, and makes you feel better about yourself.
  • Join a support group. Support groups are a great way to share problems and concerns.
  • Keep your sense of humour. Laughter helps to lower your stress.
