It is important that you take care of your health to prevent a complication after a limb amputation.
- Get help to quit smoking. Smoking can cause poor circulation and is also a risk factor for limb amputation. Talk to your doctor or join a program to help you quit smoking (called a smoking cessation program).
- Having a proper diet and proper nutrition will help your limb heal and improve your energy levels. Ask to speak with a dietitian if you have any concerns about your nutrition.
- Manage other medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure to prevent a complication.
Pain control
You will get a prescription for pain medication when you are discharged from the hospital. You can start to take an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) as your pain lessens. Follow the directions on the package or take as directed by your surgeon.
Taking an active role in your medical care, recovery, and rehabilitation is very important to stay healthy. If you’re not sure how to do this, talk to one your healthcare providers.
