Learning about reducing medicine cost

Here are some things you can do to help save money on your medicines.

doctor or pharmacist

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. They may have some ideas to help you lower medicine costs.

generic medicine

  • Ask for medicines that cost less but work just as well. You may be able to use a generic medicine instead of a brand name medicine.

provincial health plan

  • Find out how your provincial health plan or private health insurance covers medicines. Your plan may only cover certain medicines.

bulk medications

  • Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you can get a larger supply of your medicine for chronic and stable health conditions.

healthcare team

  • Have your medicines reviewed regularly by your healthcare team. They will make sure everything is up to date, and you are only taking the medicines you need.

work provided medicine coverage

  • Find out if you are eligible for medicine coverage through your work, government services, or other organizations. Some drug companies may offer medicine support programs. Talk to your healthcare team to learn more.
