Systemic Treatment Video Series (Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapy)

​​​​​​​​​There is much to learn when you are first diagnosed and if you are undergoing systemic treatment for cancer. This video series was produced by CancerControl Alberta, with patients and cancer experts, to help you learn about systemic treatment, as well as different treatment types (e.g. chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy), how to manage side effects, and how to live well during treatment. For patients using a Baxter Infusor​​​™​, there is an instructional video to walk you through disconnecting your infusor.

What is Systemic Treatment?

This video contains presentations from 3 healthcare professionals. Dr. John Walker, a medical oncologist, talks about the different types of treatment. Fiona Garforth-Bles, an oncology nurse, explains what will happen at the treatment appointment, how to prepare, and how to communicate with the healthcare team. Frances Cusano, a pharmacist, talks about the importance of knowing what medications you take, and taking them as prescribed. You’ll also meet 2 patients, Doug and Shannon, who share their experiences of being diagnosed, how they coped, and what the treatment experience was like.

 

Side Effect Management

This video contains presentations from 3 healthcare professionals. Dr. John Walker, a medical oncologist, talks about the important side effects. Fiona Garforth-Bles, an oncology nurse, explains the common side effects, how to manage them, and the importance of talking with your healthcare team when the side effects happen. Jennifer Black, a registered dietitian, talks about nutrition, hydration during treatment and the importance of maintaining your weight during treatment. You’ll also meet 2 patients, Doug and Shannon, who talk about how they managed their side effects, and how side effects are different for everyone.

 

Targeted Therapy

In this video, Dr. John Walker, a medical oncologist, talks about targeted therapy, what it is, the common side effects, and why it can only be used for certain people.

 

Immunotherapy

In this video, Dr. John Walker, a medical oncologist, talks about immunotherapy and how it is changing cancer treatment. He’ll explain how immunotherapy works, the common side effects, and the importance of communicating with your healthcare team when you notice changes to your body or how you feel. You’ll also meet Jay, a patient, who was treated with immunotherapy and shares his point of view about this treatment.

 

Living Your Best During Systemic Treatment

In this video, you’ll meet 2 healthcare professionals. Noelle Liwski, a psychologist, talks about different ways you can cope during your treatment. She also discusses topics such as fatigue, sexuality and intimacy, managing stress, and provides an overview of what resources are available to you and your family. Jennifer Black, a registered dietitian, talks about the importance of nutrition, and healthy ways to get the nutrients your body needs during treatment. You’ll also meet Doug and Shannon, 2 patients, who share ways they coped during treatment and how to advocate for yourself.

 

Elastomeric Ambulatory Infusor (Baxter Infusor™) Instructional Video

In this video, you will learn how to safely disconnect your Baxter Infusor from your CVAD (Central Venous Access Device) at home and how to dispose of your pump and supplies. This includes the Long Term Tunnelled Line, the PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter), and IVAD (Implanted Venous Access Device), also known as a port.
