What follow-up do I need after bariatric surgery?
You’ll need to have follow-up for the rest of your life after having bariatric surgery. This includes having regular blood tests (at least once a year) and getting support for the lifestyle changes you need to make.
You’ll have support with:
- the changes in what you eat and how much you eat
- taking vitamin and mineral supplements
- taking care of your mental and emotional health
- being active
- keeping other healthy habits you developed before surgery
Your healthcare team will also look for any problems you may develop after surgery (called complications). Your follow-up care will include checking your:
- weight
- nutrition
- medicines
- general health
How often will I have follow-up appointments?
How often you go for follow-up depends on your needs and where you had surgery. Most people will have follow-up at the following times after surgery:
- at 2 weeks
- at 4 to 6 weeks
- at 3 months
- at 6 months
- at 9 months
- at 12 months
After 12 months, you and your healthcare team will decide how often you need to have follow-up appointments.
