Getting Enough Calcium and Vitamin D
Vitamin D Supplement Recommendations for Healthy Albertans
Page Content
Alberta Health Services - Nutrition Services has done an in-depth review of vitamin D recommendations for healthy populations.
Since we can’t get enough vitamin D from food to meet our body’s needs, Alberta Health Services recommends that all healthy Albertans take a vitamin D supplement. The table below shows how much vitamin D supplement we need to take at different ages.
Age |
Recommended daily vitamin D supplement amount (IU) |
0–12 months | 400 IU |
1–18 years | 400 IU |
19–50 years | 400 IU |
51 years and older | 1000 IU |
Pregnancy and breastfeeding | 400 IU |
It is recommended that all
healthy infants be given a vitamin D supplement every day:
- Breastmilk and infant formula have vitamin D in them. However, breastfed babies aren’t able to meet their vitamin D needs through breastmilk alone.
- Babies drinking infant formula may not always drink the amount needed to meet their vitamin D needs.
Some people may need higher amounts of vitamin D, such as those at risk of osteoporosis. Speak with your healthcare provider if you think you may need higher amounts of vitamin D.
