Indigenous Hospital Navigation Services

This program provides:

  • case management
  • patient advocacy
  • cultural teaching
  • patient/client language interpretation
  • health literacy support
  • logistical support for discharge planning, counseling, and traditional Indigenous healing services for Indigenous peoples

This service is available on-site in hospitals and public health centres. Upon request, staff can be present at hospital rounds, medical appointments and case conferences.

Aboriginal Cultural Helpers also gather traditional medicines, educate about ceremonial protocol, and are available to healthcare staff for consultation on a diverse range of Indigenous patient issues.

Patients and clients may also be asked about their healthcare experience to help ensure they receive the best possible healthcare.

Interventional Radiography / Angiography

Interventional Radiography is a sub-specialty of Diagnostic Imaging (radiology) that uses imag-guided procedures for both therapeutic and diagnostic Purposes. Interventional radiography can be done using x-ray, CT, Ultrasound or MRI images and are done to diagnose and treat disease in almost every organ system.

Angiography, which is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a radio-opaque dye and a specialized x-ray camera to take pictures of the blood flow in specific blood vessels (arteries or veins) or blood flow within the heart itself. Sometimes treatments are done during an angiogram.

Nuclear Medicine

Clients swallow, inhale, or are given a needle with a radiotracer before their exam. Radiotracers go to a specific body part so the camera can take pictures. (tests may take a number of hours to complete; patients may be required to return later that day or the next day to complete exam).

Radiotracers are also given to treat diseases like thyroid disease.

Palliative Care Consult Team (Inpatient)

Provides help to your health care team in managing your problems and concerns. This service is available in all care settings in the Edmonton Zone.

At home or in a hospital your main health care team provides your palliative care. A referral from your Doctor or Nurse Practitioner is needed when they want help from the palliative care service.

Our Services Include:

  • Providing consultative services and working closely with doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Home Care staff and hospital teams
  • Helping provide full care (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) to the patient and family with a life-limiting disease
  • Assessing the need for transfer to the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit or to a hospice palliative care unit

Provides a large collection of books, DVD's, credible websites and pamphlets covering topics including:

  • cancer types and therapies
  • coping with cancer
  • bereavement
  • nutrition
  • exercise
  • inspirational & motivational stories

Specially trained volunteers staff the Centre make every effort to answer requests for information from our resources or refer to those individuals or agencies who may be able to help. Students may be given specific time or resource number limits on loans. Lending period is 3 weeks for books and A / V materials. A maximum of 3 items may be borrowed at a time.

Patient Email Well Wishes

As part of our support for patient care and comfort, friends and family of inpatients at hospital and health care facilities can send well wishes via email. Sites participating in the program will receive the message, will ensure that the message is only "well-wish" (any other type of communication will be deleted) and will arrange for delivery within 3 business days. A couple of important reminders - the electronic delivery system is not a secure connection, so please don't add any confidential information to your message. Plus the "well-wish" system does not allow for replies or confirm receipt / delivery confirmation.

Physiotherapy Breast Class for Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy

This patient education class is taught by a physiotherapist. The class provides breast cancer patients with:

  • information about some possible problems (shoulder and muscle stiffness, swelling, cording) that may occur with breast cancer treatments
  • advice about strategies for recovery following treatment
  • description/review of exercises that help to get the shoulder moving and keep it moving well
  • information about the benefits of being active
  • tips to realize, identify and lower their risk of developing arm problems after breast surgery or radiation treatment
  • a helpful group setting where patients can ask questions and share concerns

Rehabilitation has many benefits: It can help manage various cancer-related symptoms and side effects such as pain, lymphedema, fatigue and changes in thinking, memory, speech, language, voice quality and mobility.

The Rehabilitation Oncology program consists of a team of rehabilitation specialists including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, a physiatrist and speech and language therapists. Services vary per location, however many services may be accessed through virtual care (e.g. phone, Zoom, Telehealth):

Symptom Control & Palliative Care Consult Program

The Pain and Symptom Control Program is for patients of the Cross Cancer Institute who are having problems with pain or other symptoms from cancer. Depending on needs, a patient may see either several team members during a half-day appointment, or only a few team members during a shorter appointment. The patient is followed by the team until pain or other symptoms improve. Management is then continued by the primary care phsysician or nurse practitioner.

Symptom Control & Palliative Care Telehealth Program

This clinic helps patients with the pain and other symptoms from cancer by providing support to physicians and nurse peactitioners caring for cancer patients living in rural communities in the northern half of Alberta (North and Central Zones)

High-definition televisions link the remote care centre to a multi-disciplinary team at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. The team can then assess the patient without the patient leaving his or her home community. The patient may still require travel to Edmonton during their care, but many parts of the care can be provided to the patient through Telehealth.
